Sadiq Khan Puts Solar Front and Centre in New London Plan
In a new initiative from London mayor Sadiq Khan, all boroughs in the capital are to ensure that every development maximises the opportunities for on-site electricity from solar.
Khan pledged to increase the use of solar across London around the time of his election. In the absence of mentions of other specific technologies in the new draft London Plan, the Mayor’s office is placing solar front and centre in its plans for renewable energy generation, stating this approach will reduce carbon emissions, reduce energy costs to occupants, improve London’s energy resilience and support the growth of green jobs.
Solar use will be supported by a net zero-carbon target for new developments which will involve decreasing carbon dioxide pollution from both the construction and operation of the site and minimising annual and peak energy consumption.
Boroughs will also have to establish and administer a carbon offset fund, the payments of which must be ring-fenced to implement projects that deliver greenhouse gas reductions.
